The two experimental artist-auteurs first connected last year and forged a creative partnership which only deepened once they got into the studio together.
The 3-track EP was co-created by both and introduced with the avant-soul devotional ‘LEAVE’ last month, featuring additional production from . Elsewhere, the spectral trip-hop flourish of ‘AGAIN’, featuring co-production from , pulses with a nocturnal edge, and the title track – which came to BODUR as a stream-of-consciousness – is a lullaby-esque, spoken-word dirge that captures the EP’s dissonant, dystopian feel.
Of the track, BODUR says it’s “a nod to how the state of the world and its news cycles felt at the time, filled with war and division. I thought of all the children displaced and affected by it around the world, so I wrote a kind of nursery rhyme referencing the British ‘magpie nursery rhyme’ that my Nan recites whenever she sees a magpie around London.”
BODUR is a London-based multi-disciplinary artist. Her debut album ‘MAQAM’, released last year, used the centuries-old Arabic maqam system to explore identity, ancestry, racism and displacement. The release arrived ahead of her recent ‘SECOND LANGUAGE’ project, built from a 28-hour durational performance and live recording at The V&A East Storehouse.
Coby Sey employs an open-door approach to his repertoire, evident in his long-term collaborations with Mica Levi and Tirzah, as well as with peers like Dean Blunt, TYSON, Laurel Halo, and Speakers Corner Quartet. Sey released his debut album ‘Conduit’ (AD 93) in 2022. He is also a founding member of London’s CURL collective (alongside Mica and Brother May) and hosts a long-running monthly show on NTS.
