Blossoms – Songs From The Wedding Cake

Well, CLASH always felt the indie sphere was slightly incestuous but now here’s proof. gathered last year to toast singer nuptials – he married drummer sister . The nicest gang in indie are now actual in-laws, something that gives new album ‘Songs From The Wedding Cake’ a warm, familial glow.

Always a group to sing from the heart, ‘Songs From The Wedding Cake’ is Blossoms at their most fun. Old pal Rick Astley loans backing vocals for ‘Joke About Divorce’ while the heartfelt radiance of ‘The Kardashians’ – “I think you ended up saving me” – is certainly new. Borrowing from the Nile Rodgers chord book on disco-fied ‘Meet Me In Love’ allows Blossoms a chance to hit the dancefloor.

Something blue, perchance? Well, there’s little here to feel down about. Blossoms know their identity and revel in it, producing an album of wall-to-wall indie thrills. ‘Husband’ is wonderfully heart on sleeve, with Tom Ogden sealing off his wedding vows with a killer chorus. There’s room for introspection, too – ‘Guts’ and ‘Where Have You Been My Whole Life?’ let the softness linger.

There’s an old theory that darker emotions – anger, rage, depression – produce the best art. Perhaps that’s why people swoon over the intrigue that surrounds Fleetwood Mac’s divorce epic ‘Rumours’. But here, Blossoms switch that around – an album that revels in the subtle joys of commitment, ‘Songs From The Wedding Cake’ is a first dance delight.
