The Black Clover anime is set to make its return later this year, so you’ll need an essential filler list of skippable episodes if you don’t have the time to rewatch all 170 episodes from scratch — more so if you’re only tuning in for the first time.

Thankfully, even throughout Asta’s lengthy journey to become the Wizard King of a magical world — despite being born without any magic — it's pretty easy to follow through its various arcs. That’s along with the Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King, which many are right to be confused about whether that’s canon or not.

To get you fully caught up in as little time as possible, saving you a few hours of unnecessary fluff, here’s the complete list of the Black Clover anime’s filler episodes — and what category Sword of the Wizard King lands in.

Which episodes of Black Clover are filler?

At the time of writing, 18 episodes of the 170-episode Black Clover anime have been classed as pure filler.

Confirmed by the team at Anime Filler List, these skippable episodes are as follows:

Unlike more prominent filler anime with multiple skippable arcs (like Boruto and Naruto/Naruto Shippuden’s filler episodes), most of the Black Clover anime’s filler is essentially made up of singular or multi-part bottle episodes.

For example, episode 29 — titled “Path” is more or less a Black Clover clip show highlight reel of the previous 28 episodes. Then, episode 66 (“Battle to the Death?! Yami VS Jack”) is a one-off side story about captains Yami and Jack getting caught up in a food-selling contest.

Some anime-exclusive episodes (aka “anime-canon”), those not actually part of the original manga, can actually have an overarching impact on the story — depending on the direction of the adaptation; in the case of these 18 episodes, though, you won’t miss out on anything whatsoever by skipping them.

Only watch them if you genuinely love Black Clover's world and characters, and you want to see more of them however possible.

Is the Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King movie canon or filler?

Although there has been no official confirmation by the production company Studio Pierrot, the Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King movie is by the anime's community.

Firstly, as pointed out by fans on Reddit, Sword of the Wizard King takes place during the six-month timeskip between the Elf-Reincarnation Arc and Heart Kingdom Joint Struggle Arc; with that, there’s currently nothing else going on in the timeline at that point that the movie could contradict.

Secondly, and most importantly, the creator of Black Clover — Yūki Tabata — worked on Sword of the Wizard King as both chief supervisor and original character designer, as confirmed by outlets like Anime News Network in 2023.

There’s, of course, always a very small chance something could be revealed in the upcoming Black Clover sequel anime (titled “Black Clover Season 2”) that could make Sword of the Wizard King non-canon, but nothing along those lines has been speculated as far as the manga goes.

How to watch Black Clover in the US and UK

Alternatively, the anime can be watched on Hulu in the US, too. For the UK, however, Netflix is the backup service to watch the Black Clover anime.

Interestingly, though, due to exclusive streaming rights, Netflix is currently the only service you can use to watch the Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King in both the US and UK.
