Summer blockbuster season might be over, but autumn normally tends to be a pretty exciting time for new movie releases, not least because it marks the start of film festival season.

Several major films are set to have their premieres at the imminent festivals in Venice, Toronto and Telluride ahead of wide releases later in the year – but there are also a number of exciting releases arriving in UK cinemas this month.

Among the highlights are Weapons director Zach Cregger's fresh take on Resident Evil (which serves as a hard relaunch for the video game adaptation franchise) and a new version of Jane Austen's iconic work Sense and Sensibility, with Normal People star Daisy Edgar-Jones in the lead role.

Elsewhere, there's a sequel to 1990s cult classic Practical Magic – which sees Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock reprising their roles – a follow-up to 2022 survival thriller Fall and a new horror-tinged adventure for Shaun the Sheep.

Meanwhile, there's also a new Robin Hood movie starring Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer, a World War II drama with Andrew Scott and Brendan Fraser and new films led by major stars including Saoirse Ronan, Brad Pitt and Juliette Binoche.

This atmospheric Australian horror film delves into the subject of so-called gay conversion therapy – with a chilling supernatural twist.

The Death of Robin Hood

Hugh Jackman stars in this sombre film from A Quiet Place: Day One director Michael Sarnoski, which finds the iconic outlaw confronting his violent past after he is badly injured in battle and takes refuge in a priory.

There's a key role for Jodie Comer as the prioress who offers him a chance at salvation, while other cast members include Skarsgård, Noah Jupe and Murray Bartlett.

Release date: Friday 4 September in cinemas

Domhnall Gleeson leads this Wicker Man-esque Scottish comedy about an awkward council worker who travels to a remote island tasked with relocating an eccentric brother and sister who live there.

Gayle Rankin and Grant O'Rourke play the siblings who have lived alone on the island for three decades and don't take too kindly to strangers.

Release date: Wednesday 9 September in cinemas

This drama explores the crucial role played by meteorologist James Stagg in preparations for the D-Day invasion – with Andrew Scott, Brendan Fraser and Damian Lewis among the stars.

Adapted by David Haig and director Anthony Maras from the former's 2014 stage play, it shines a light on a relatively unheralded hero of the Allied war effort.

Release date: Friday 11 September in cinemas

This sequel to the 2022 disaster flick stars Harriet Slater and Arsema Thomas as two women who decide to pay tribute to their sister and friend who had died in the first film – by travelling to Thailand to conquer a treacherous plank walk on Mount Kwan.

However, they soon find themselves fighting for their own survival when they are stranded on a fragile plank more than 3,000 feet in the air following a mountain rock slide.

Release date: Friday 11 September in cinemas

Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock return to their iconic roles in this sequel to the '90s cult classic – with Maisie Williams, Joey King and Lee Pace among the new faces joining the cast.

Set twenty-five years after the events of the first film, it follows the Owens clan as they face a new crisis when a discovery regarding the family's history and the origins of their magic comes to light.

Barbarian and Weapons director Zach Cregger helms this total relaunch of the long-running video game adaptation franchise – with Austin Abrams in the starring role

The synopsis teases: "Bryan, a medical courier, is in the process of making a delivery to Raccoon City General hospital when an outbreak forces him to fight for survival."

Release date: Friday 18 September in cinemas

Saoirse Ronan stars in this pitch black comedy as a primary school teacher who kidnaps one of her 10-year-old students and locks him in her basement.

The English-language debut of Swedish director Jonatan Etzler, it originally premiered at the 2025 Toronto Film Festival and arrives in cinemas just over a year later.

Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom

Release date: Friday 18 September in cinemas

The latest feature from Aardman is a horror-tinged Halloween-set tale that sees Shaun becoming a mad scientist as he attempts to save a pumpkin patch that had been accidentally destroyed by the farmer.

But according to the official synopsis, circumstances worsen when "the Farmer goes missing and a wild beast is found roaming the woods of Mossingham."

Queen at Sea

Release date: Friday 18 September in cinemas

Juliette Binoche stars in this drama as a woman attempting to cope with her mother's advanced dementia, which creates a rift with her stepfather played by Tom Courtenay.

Written and directed by Lance Hammer – his first film since the acclaimed Ballast in 2008 – it won two prizes when it debuted at the Berlin Film Festival in February.

Heart of the Beast

Release date: Wednesday 23 September in cinemas

Brad Pitt reunites with Fury director David Ayer for a survival thriller about a former special forces soldier who becomes trapped in the Alaskan wilderness with his combat dog after surviving a plane crash.

The synopsis teases: "Together, they battle the elements and other animals in a harsh landscape that would likely kill any other man or dog."

Sense and Sensibility

Release date: Friday 25 September in cinemas

Daisy Edgar-Jones leads the cast for this new feature adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel, which Ang Lee previously turned into an Oscar-winning film starring Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet in 1995.

Esmé Creed-Miles, Caitríona Balfe, Frank Dillane, George MacKay, and Fiona Shaw are among the other big names in the cast, while the film is helmed by Blue Jean director Georgia Oakley.

Release date: Friday 25 September in cinemas

The first film in a decade from South Korean director Na Hong-jin is a madcap creature feature that serves as an utterly breathless piece of action cinema and stars Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander like you've never seen them before.

The synopsis reads: "A police chief, a policewoman and a group of hunters try to track down and kill a mysterious creature that's laying waste to a Korean village."
