The BBC is set to adapt the novel The Paying Guests about an "intoxicating love affair" into an upcoming series.

The Paying Guests is a 2014 book by Sarah Waters about a 1922 love affair that turns into a twisting crime thriller.

With this adaptation, all six of Sarah Waters's novels will have been adapted for the screen, with her 1998 novel Tipping the Velvet adapted into a three-part BBC series in 2002.

Set in London in 1922, The Paying Guests follows Frances Wray and her mother as they take in married lodgers Lilian and Leonard Barber.

What begins as a clandestine, intoxicating love affair between Frances and Lilian spirals into a twisting crime thriller, culminating in a brutal murder and a nail-biting court case.

Killing Eve and In My Skin writer Kayleigh Llewellyn is attached to the series to bring it to life on screen which will be produced by BBC Studios Fiction. Llewellyn has also worked as a writer on Chloe, Casualty, Stella, Oh Be Joyful and the upcoming BBC series The Dream Lands.

The BBC also previously aired TV adaptations of Waters' novels Fingersmith in 2005 and The Night Watch in 2011 whilst her two other novels Affinity and The Little Stranger were adapted into films instead, the latter of which saw a theatrical release.

Fingersmith, which is a Victorian psychological thriller about two young women whose lives become entangled in a complex web of theft, betrayal, and switched identities, served as the inspiration for Park Chan‑wook’s 2016 film The Handmaiden.

Tipping the Velvet also saw an adaptation to the stage in 2015 and was performed in both London and Edinburgh.

Sarah Waters is an award-winning Welsh novelist who was appointed an OBE in 2019 for her services to literature. Her novels have been shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize and the Women's Prize for Fiction and she has achieved significant commercial success alongside her critical acclaim.
