New York singer-songwriter has linked up with New Jersey alt-pop outfit to deliver ‘Sweetless Surrender,’ a captivating single where acoustic intimacy meets full-throated indie rock. Soaked in nineties style and glowing with the spirit of Lilith Fair classics, the track captures the exhilarating rush of romance through a perfect blend of rock and pop.
The arrangement unfolds with deceptive simplicity. A tender acoustic guitar introduces Ava’s vocals in a quiet, personal atmosphere, only to break open into an explosive sonic rush. Shifting into high-energy rhythms, the production feels rich and multi-layered. Ava’s vocal range is a standout force, effortlessly gliding from delicate lower notes to soaring upper registers delivered with an authentic feeling. When Young Rising Sons frontman Andy Tongren steps into the second verse, their vocal chemistry feels effortless. Underneath it all, driving percussion adds crucial weight and momentum, holding every element together in perfect alignment.
This release represents a significant milestone for both acts. Since her 2021 debut, Ava Franks has built a reputation for crafting honest pop anthems about navigating young adulthood. ‘
Sweetless Surrender’ marks her very first collaborative single, a full-circle moment for an artist who grew up admiring the Jersey band. The New Jersey band brings its own history of songwriting and touring to the track, having amassed well over 100 million streams, toured alongside acts such as Halsey and Weezer, and released its debut album, Still Point in a Turning World, in 2022. Both acts share a commitment to honest songwriting and artistic authenticity, making this collaboration a natural meeting point for their respective sounds.
The accompanying visual complements the single’s easygoing energy. Featuring a beautiful lyric video following two people sharing a day by the ocean, the quick cuts and dynamic camera angles create an engaging experience that mirrors the song’s carefree energy. By pushing past familiar boundaries, both artists have produced an unforgettable anthem.
