The Yorkshire-set series, adapted from James Herriot's beloved memoirs, is preparing for a seventh run that moves the story into 1946.

James and Siegfried must contend with the arrival of new vet, Granville Bennett, while Helen is forced to have a frank conversation with her dad Richard about the future of the farm.

"We need to start saying goodbye to the old way of life and starting a new one."

Elsewhere, Helen and James's eldest, Jimmy, officially starts school and Mrs Hall adjusts to Siegfried and Dorothy's deepening relationship, while Tristan's relationship with Charlotte is threatened by the prospect of her potentially leaving.

According to the season 7 story details, "James is excited about new developments in veterinary medicine, but a new vet in the area threatens the status quo".

It continues: "The world at large may be changing, but inside this slice of Yorkshire, the Dales will always offer the same perfect escapism.

"Packed with warmth, humour and community spirit, the series brings more heartwarming tales of people and animals alike."

Alongside the main cast – Nicholas Ralph as James, Rachel Shenton as Helen, Samuel West as Siegfried, Anna Madeley as Mrs Hall and Callum Woodhouse as Tristan – Caolan McCarthy (Belfast) makes his big introduction as Granville Bennett.

He will be joined by additional new guest stars alongside the following returning faces: Patricia Hodge as Mrs Pumphrey, Tony Pitts as Richard, Imogen Clawson as Jenny, Maimie McCoy as Dorothy, Gaia Wise as Charlotte and Mollie Winnard as Maggie.

All Creatures Great and Small season 7 will premiere on Thursday 17 September at 9pm on 5. All Creatures Great and Small: Behind the Magic will air at 9pm on Friday 18 September.
