Alan Carr has had an incredible 12 months, with the comedian starring in a host of shows like Changing Ends season 3, Amanda and Alan's Greek Job and Last One Laughing season 2, as well as winning The Celebrity Traitors season 1 and being announced as a new judge on The Masked Singer.

Now, he is capping it off with a huge win at the National Television Awards, as Carr was announced as the recipient of the prestigious Special Recognition Award, the only category not voted for by the public.

Accepting the award, an emotional Carr said: "It's amazing. It's been very surreal and triggering. But thank you [to the audience], because if you didn't watch the shows and vote, then I wouldn't be here."

At the awards ceremony, hosted by Joel Dommett at the O2, Carr's win was revealed as a surprise even to him, as Amanda Holden and Paloma Faith gave a performance of I Know Him So Well, dedicated to him.

Other winners to have already been announced at this year's National Television Awards include Michael McIntyre's Big Show, Sheridan Smith drama I Fought the Law, Gogglebox and Clarkson's Farm.

In past years, the Special Recognition Award has been won by the likes of Wallace and Gromit, Davina McCall, Sarah Lancashire, Sir Lenny Henry, Line of Duty and Sir Michael Palin.

Adding to Carr's incredible run, earlier this year it was confirmed that his hit show with Susie Dent, Secret Genius, will be returning for a second season, with seven episodes rather than six.

The competition series sees Carr and Dent guiding audiences through a set of mind boggling challenges designed to uncover the hidden potential of ordinary people with extraordinary minds.

The first season aired in January of this year and soon became a big hit for Channel 4, with episode 1 Attracting 2.1 million viewers.
